It is a part of The Institute For Transfusion Medicine(sm) (ITxM(sm)). ITxM(sm) has
assembled one of the largest most talented medical staffs in the
country. Six physicians provide support not only to the blood center but
to a wide variety of laboratory and clinical programs involving nearly
all area hospitals.
Our stem cell and aphaeresis services collect stem cells for
transplantation for most of the hospitals in the city. In 1999, we
established a cord blood bank to collect (from area hospitals) and store
cord blood stem cells for transplantation in children and, ultimately it
is expected, for adults. Our cord blood bank has nearly 2000 cord bloods
stored and is one of only 6 centers nationwide to partner with the
National Marrow Donor Program.
For decades, ITxM(sm) has been known for its expertise in coagulation and
bleeding disorders. It sponsors the Hemophilia Center of Western
Pennsylvania, which takes care of hundreds of patients with inherited
bleeding disorders in the tri-state area. Our specialty coagulation
laboratory performs complex tests for nearly all the hospitals in the
region and many across the nation. ITxM(sm) contributions in the area of
coagulation were instrumental in the successful establishment of the
liver transplant program. ITxM(sm) was also the first in the region to
introduce advanced molecular testing for clotting disorders.
Together, ITxM(sm) provides the region with medical expertise in transfusion
medicine and coagulation, which is found nowhere else in the country.
