In 1970, Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 154, requested the President issue a proclamation designating the Month of January as National Blood Donor Month. Since then Americans have been asked to help save lives by doing their share to increase the number of voluntary blood donations, not only in January, but throughout the year.
Every day more than 38,000 blood donations are required to meet the needs of hospitals and emergency treatment facilities. Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness. Because a reduction in donor turnout can put our nation's blood inventory at a critical low, it is essential that people become aware of the need for blood donations.
How Can You Help?
• Donate blood four times a year
• Encourage friends and family to donate
• Organize a blood drive at your church, company or community
• Volunteer at your local blood bank
