In 1992 my 11 year old son was diagnosed with leukemia. He had to have many blood transfusions and platelets. With God and the generosity of others giving blood, my son is alive and well. He is now 23 years old. I have been a faithful donor for the past 10 years so that other people may have a chance at life.

When I donate platelets, I don't know who will be a recipient. However, I see my high school pal who died in 1965 after being diagnosed with leukemia. I see a college friend who received a bone marrow transplant from his twin. I donate platelets for the children and young adults who need platelets to fight their diseases: leukemia, sickle cell anemia, aplastic anemia. These young people are just waiting to make a difference as teachers, scientists, doctors, volunteers ... I donate for our future.

I always knew blood could be life-saving but never realized it could be life-giving. Not long ago my husband died of cancer. In the last 60 days of his life he was given blood which restored his ability to think and gave him more energy. It was during that time I decided how life-giving blood was. Now I donate as often as I can.

My mother was Rh Negative and my father Rh Positive. When I was born the doctors were standing by ready to give me a total transfusion. Fortunately, it wasn't necessary as I was Rh Negative myself. In fact, I am 0- which means I am a universal donor. I consider this to be a blessing because it means I can save many, many lives.

I gave my first pint of blood when my friends Ed and Linda asked for help. Their newborn daughter was born prematurely and needed blood. The experience was so easy and I felt that I made a real difference. I've been donating almost every 8 weeks ever since. Oh, yes, the preemie is now a sophomore in college and doing just great.
